Edition 2: CMS Advance Beneficiary Notice of Noncoverage (ABN)

TLC gets many questions about the ABN. This bulletins intent is to provide clarification on the use of the ABN. An ABN must be issued by providers, physicians, practitioners and suppliers in situations where Medicare payment is expected to be denied.

  • Use for ‘Original Medicare’ beneficiaries (not Advantage)
  • Complete and deliver the notice to beneficiary or representative before providing services
  • Verbally review the ABN with the beneficiary or representative
  • Answer beneficiary questions before obtaining signature
  • Retain original copy of signed ABN
  • Provide ‘signed copy’ to the beneficiary
  • Pre-printing of lab-specific key information and denial reasons is permitted
