De-identifying Employee Samples

De-identifying Employee Samples Posted: Thu Jan 10, 2019 9:13 pm
New to the forum so I apologize if this has been covered before.

We were recently told by our compliance and billing departments that it is not possible to de-identifying or give an alias to employees when we have lab work done.

Does anyone using EPIC Beaker have experience with this? We are seeing a lot of our techs use other facilities to have their personal labs done because we are such a small group we don't want our co-workers knowing our most intimate details. And it's not a matter of gossip... More of a 'oh the patient's blood work is consistent with cancer, oh crap it's someone I eat lunch with everyday and they don't even have this diagnosis, yet' kind of thing .. like an elephant in the room.

I believe that this issue refers to HIPPA standards to protect personal health information. Although I understand your discomfort, you should NEVER under no circumstances discuss patient test results during lunch regardless of whose results they are. Your hospital is looking at this request from the HIPPA perspective and rightly so.

Our EMR (eClinicalWorks) allows us to lock down certain charts so that only those with the right access can open them. It's pretty basic, where a given patient's chart is completely locked down, or not at all, but may be an idea, especially for small operations.
